Happy Veterans Day

This is a picture of Wisconsin a few days ago but it reminds me of the stories that were told about the now famous Armistice day storm, 11-11-1940.

My Dad told me that he was out picking corn that day. It started out to be in the 60's and it was time to finish with getting the crops in. He said that when it hit, it hit so fast and hard that he had a hard time getting back to the house. He told us that the temperature dropped so fast and the wind started with the heavy snow that he was a bit worried about getting home as he could not see even the direction he was going.

Beyond that, I salute the veterans who have served this country. I think more needs to be done for the people who serve in the military besides a day on the calendar.

Fall Work Winding Down

The last work in the fall is coming to an end. Jonesie finally finished the raised bed that will be for the squash and other assorted goodies next year.
The challenge was the steepness of the yard where we wanted to put the bed. On one end the difference from front to back is about 10 -12 inches. But as you can see on this end it is about 20 - 24 inches. That meant that I had to haul in 5 loads of fill before I even started to put in the top soil.
Now it needs some manure and peat moss then covered with about another 6 inches of top soil and it should be ready for planting next spring.

The Last Hurrah

The last rose of the year. I was so surprised that this one blossomed after the cold weather that came thru here last weekend. Now today it was 74 degrees outside and not a cloud in the sky. They say we will be back to normal, mid 40's, by the end of the week.
